DR. MAUREEN "Sunshine" SMITH
Founder of M S Mediation Center, Sunshine is a proud mother of five adult children and grandmother to nine beautiful grandchildren. She enjoys traveling, playing tennis, fitness, and spending time outdoors—whether exploring the mountains or riding her e-bike along scenic trails. When she’s not at the M S Mediation Center of North Carolina, she's spending meaningful time with her family. Sunshine also serves as a college chaplain with a passion to help students embrace their spiritual purpose in life. Driven by a deep passion for transforming conflict and empowering individuals, Sunshine is dedicated to helping build stronger, healthier relationships and communities.

MS SMITH MEDIATION CENTER OF NC, is a nonprofit mediation and advocacy practice based in North Carolina, founded by Dr. Maureen “SunShine” Smith. With over two decades of professional experience, Dr. Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and a personalized, hands-on approach to every case. Since 2022, she serves as a Certified District Court Mediator with the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission, offering trusted expertise in resolving complex disputes with care and integrity.
Dr. Smith is a seasoned mediator, conflict resolution specialist, and lifelong advocate for peace.
With over a decade of service spanning Europe and the United States, Dr. Smith worked extensively with the Overseas American Red Cross in partnership with the United States Army and the United States Air Force. Her work focused on humanitarian outreach, military and veteran services, and delivering critical emergency support to service members and their families. During this time, she also mediated complex international and domestic conflicts, helping to resolve disputes involving cultural, family, and institutional dynamics both within and beyond military contexts.
Her commitment to humanitarian peacekeeping remains central to her work. Dr. Smith continues to empower individuals and families through practical solutions, compassionate leadership, and a firm belief that every conflict carries the potential for successful transformation.

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Maureen S. Smith attended Guilford College, where she received her B.A. (Religious Studies), University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she received her M.A. (Liberal Arts and Peace and Conflict Studies), Regent University School of Law (Master of Law-Alternative Dispute Resolution). Dr. Smith also attended Christ Theological Seminary, where she received her Doctor of Biblical Studies.
