MS SMITH MEDIATION CENTER OF NC, is a nonprofit mediation and advocacy practice based in North Carolina, founded by Dr. Maureen “SunShine” Smith. With over two decades of professional experience, Dr. Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and a personalized, hands-on approach to every case. Since 2022, she has been a Certified District Court Mediator with the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission, offering trusted expertise in resolving complex disputes with care and integrity. 

Dr. Smith is a seasoned mediator, conflict resolution specialist, and lifelong advocate for mental health and community empowerment. As the daughter of a single mother (My Jewel) living with a mental illness, she developed a deep, personal commitment to supporting individuals and families facing similar challenges—an early experience that continues to guide her professional mission.

With over a decade of service spanning Europe and the United States, Dr. Smith worked extensively with the Overseas American Red Cross in partnership with the United States Army and the United States Air Force. Her work focused on humanitarian outreach, military and veteran services, and delivering critical emergency support to service members and their families. During this time, she also mediated complex international and domestic conflicts, helping to resolve disputes involving cultural, family, and institutional dynamics both within and beyond military contexts.

Today, Dr. Smith leads a Mediation Center offering a wide array of services, including general and business mediation, family and divorce resolution, child support and visitation agreements, real estate contract disputes, and mobile notary and signing agent services. She also specializes in adult and child mental health care advocacy, military and veteran services, and provides conflict resolution training and development. Her commitment to humanitarian peacekeeping and holistic community support remains central to her work.

Dr. Smith continues to empower individuals and families through practical solutions, compassionate leadership, and a firm belief that every conflict carries the potential for healing and resolution.

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Maureen S. Smith attended Guilford College where she received her B.A., (Religious Studies), University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received her M.A. (Liberal Arts, and a Post-bac certificate (Peace and Conflict Studies), Regent University School of Law, (Master of Law-Alternative Dispute Resolution), Dr. Smith also attended Christ Theological Seminary where she received her Doctor of Biblical Studies.
